Embroidering our Tie Dyes

Here are some lovely WIPs from our May workshop where we added embroidery to our Tie Dyed pieces of fabric that we tied up in March. Read the previous two posts here and here

Really love this pale blue colour on the Bulls Eye piece below. A lace flower has been placed centre with a dyed blue thread couched down with silver thread. Pistol stitches are in the next circle.

Next in Turquoise, I think that this was the Spiral (or is it the Kebab?) Large chain stitches are sewn at angles creating and zig zag pattern in complimentary purple and lilac floss.

More lovely blue with Cross Stitches, Back Stitch and Chain stitches embellishing the rings formed by tying using the Bulls Eye method.

Here is a nice idea! One of our ladies dyed more pieces in extra colours and joined the resulting squares On Point to make up this lovely bag that looks great without further embellishment and is just waiting for a lining and handles.

One more bag, below. I just could not resist taking a few snaps of this awesome bag made by J. Fabric triangles are machine joined then embellished with embroidery and little charms.

Here is the other side that better shows the rich deep colours of the fabrics.
Just the kind of bag an embroiderer needs to hold her Sewing Kit when travelling to Workshops or for carrying newly acquired stash at Shows.

Thanks to everyone for allowing their projects to be photographed and to the 'Two Sue's' for leading our Dyeing Workshops.

How to Embroider a Tie Dye (Dyeing to Stitch Pt 2)

Following on from our practical Tie Dyeing lesson in March of this year, we could not wait to see what ideas our Teacher for the night, Sue Bennet, had come up with to decorate the results of our dyeing experiments.
Here is the table with all the lovely coloured threads waiting for us to dive into; along with the embroidered results of Sue's Tie Dyeing that is being photographed to provide inspiration later (I left this photo unedited as B is wearing such a lovely jumper!)

The Bulls Eye
A piece of dyed Scrim has been sewn into the centre and embellished with white and matching green French Knots. Fly Stitches and Herring Bone surround these with a little machining on the outside.

The Folded Triangle

The dye is still strong enough after the Tie Dyeing is done, to use to colour various threads and small scraps of fabric. There pieces of dyed Aida are embellished with Woven Spiders Web.

Wrapped

This was the piece that was wrapped (above) it has small white circles that have been embellished with French Knots, Blanket Stitch and Needle Weaving over buttons.

The Kebab

The Kebab dyed piece lent itself to free machine embroidery with a variegated thread used around the yellow marks.

The Spiral

Perhaps my favourite after the Bulls Eye, the Spiral looks wonderful adorned with Couched Threads and French Knots and some small beads. Just love the swirly 'ness' of it!

Gathered

More free machine around the piece that was gathered and suggested flowers to our stitcher.

What will you do with your Tie Dyed pieces? Take a look at a few of the WIPs that were stitched during the evening workshop in May; in the next post.

Till then - Happy Stitching ( and Dyeing).

APOLOGIES for the strange white lines around the last few sentences - Blogger is playing games as I have edited them 5x as the text appeared blue. Enough is Enough.....

More Fabric Pictures Painted and Stitched.

As promised here are the rest of the WIPs from the recent May Day School with Priscilla Edwards. See previous post here.

Here is a striking Poinsettia with different green fabrics to give a variegated and more natural look to the leaves. Paint strokes add more leafy effects in the background.

A Yellow Beach Hut with bunting around the door makes a cheerful scene and painted Ric Rac and free machine stitches make waves on the sea, below.

Above, painted lace, paper and fabrics make an interesting garden for this Printed Peacock, above, whilst a deep blue makes vivid water in the Harbour Scene, below.

More painted lace for the sand on the sea bottom, and printed fossil like shells add interest.

Buttons, beads and wires add embellishments and extra elements to this sweet nostalgic picture, below.

Notice that the blue wire has been used to create the Teacup Handles and echos the blue of the little Birdie perched on the stacked cups. Text is also adds another dimension. Doesn't this finished piece make you smile? Well done G.

Another great finish from K, below. Plenty of lovely blues make up the ocean around this fantastic Whale saying Hi to the sail boat on the surface. Small blue seed beads add the ripples, splashes and waves to the surface of the sea.
The machine stitching adds a realistic detail to the underneath of the whale.

Well done everyone. We look forward to seeing more finished pieces in the future.

Getting Creative with Paint, Fabric and Canvas

In May the members of Lytham St Annes Embroiderers Guild had lovely time getting a bit messy combining paint, fabric and paper  during the Day School led by Artist Priscilla Edwards.

Here are some of the works in progress at the end of the day.
Enjoy!

Really love the fresh blues on this Coffee Pot above, with the lilac in the upper left background, giving a hint of fresh flowers such as Hyacinth or Hydrangeas. Did you spot the little beach huts on the fabric bottom right? and the lace in the upper foreground gives a touch of texture.
Painted lace adds texture to the sky and grass on this lovely Paper Flowers piece, below.

This Fish is all stitched and waiting for a trim and maybe some seaweed or coral to add to the wonderful painted blues and greens of the sea in the background.

More fresh blues, below, but this time in fabric to give a background to this inviting House Collage, below.  Plaid for the roof is a nice touch and more blue for the windows pulls it all together. The topiary trees by the door give it a welcoming touch.

These Two Love Birds are an interesting coral colour and are set off well by the teal green paint that co-ordinates the background fabrics and lace. Pretty stitched flowers give it a sweet touch.

Purple is a great colour for a beach hut and goes well with the painted blue of the sky and Ric Rac sea.
Notice the net in the bottom right corner - folded and free machine stitched it makes wonderful seaweed.

That is all for this post - more in the one to follow with a couple of Finishes.
Many thanks to all who allowed their work to be photographed for our Blog and to Priscilla for teaching us her methods and inspiring everyone on the day.
